There are very few construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling centers in Brazil and these use simple technology and process basically mineral inert material. To encourage the building and operation of new units with similar technology, data relating to C&D waste management and recycling in Brazil were collected and analyzed.
· Traditionally, waste recycling cooperatives in Brazil have had little influence upon legislation. However, this new law does give recognition to the work of the catadores and prescribes integrating them into the recycling industry, while also attempting to regulate their working conditions to improve their health and safety.
· In this article, we will give an overview of the status of waste recycling in Brazil. Brazil produces 250 thousand tons of waste everyday, of which a little more than 98.2% is collected. The Southeast region has the most city coverage, and 82.6% of these cities also have selective waste collection programs.
